Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience? When I was eleven, I won first place in Chinese calligraphy competition in our elementary school. It was my first gold medal in something other than sports. Through calligraphy, I have learned artistry and patience, both of which have a major influence in my dental career.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?I have five uncles from my mother's side. They have a wide age range, spanning over twenty-three years. The second youngest uncle is like an older brother to me. When he was just a baby, my mom and my grandma would take him out for a stroll, and people thought they were three generations apart. He always tries to match me with one of the girls at his church, and he never forgets to buy presents for me on Christmas and my birthday.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?I admire people who are calm and collected, witty yet appropriate, kindhearted, and intelligent. But most importantly, I admire people who are ever improving oneself and the environment for the benefit of humanity. I have spent and will spend my whole life to strive for more of these traits in myself.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you? When I was in second grade, I fell in love with the most beautiful girl in my class one beautiful afternoon. We were talking and laughing, and I was playing with her silky long hair. I flew home that day on a piece of cloud. However that same night, I couldn't go to sleep. You see, to a second grader, falling in love probably feels like committing adultery. I didn't know what will happen if my parents or teacher found out that I like that girl. I was mortified. So I never ever talked to that girl again, and every time she approached me, I would freeze. It was not until the fifth grade when my teacher found out that I behave strangely around her and told my parents that "I think your son is in love with a girl in our class. She is quite a pretty girl." They all just teased me and laughed. "What? No punishment?" I thought. What a relief! But the damage was done. I couldn't talk to any girl I liked until my first girlfriend at the age of twenty. Obviously, she talked to me first. This is probably more sad than funny on my part, but maybe you'll find a bit of irony out of the story.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?First and foremost, I would go back to Taiwan and visit my family and friends. After all, I spent the first seventeen years of my life there. I always wanted to tour around Europe but never got the chance. Dubai sounds like a dream place to have vacation at, especially if money is not a problem.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?I would try to educate them on my knowledge and experience of how to be "free" in this world. Financial freedom, health, and love are to me some of the most important things in life. These invaluable things confer us freedom to do what we truly desire.
