What is your most memorable childhood experience?When I was little, my father used to take me out to a park on clear fall nights. He would always bring his telescope and high power binoculars. We would gaze up at distant stars, observe the moon, take note of the phases of Venus, and at certain times of the year, we would see Saturn and its rings. We would wait for shooting stars and he would talk to me about the ideas and theories that humanity has about space.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?I identify with my mother most of all. She has always made the extra effort to be a kind person. She has had many jobs and studied many topics. She has always sought happiness with her work and the people she surrounds herself with.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?I admire honesty, respect for the differences in each individual. I admire those that speak up and let their thoughts be heard. I admire loving people. I admire those who fight for virtuous causes.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you?In high school I tried to play basketball, but it wasn't really for me. I would do very well during some games, and just average in others. One particular game I became bored. The other team missed a shot; I grabbed the rebound and immediately went for a shot at the same basket. I ended up shooting the ball at the wrong basket. Thankfully, the shot didn't make it in.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?I would like to travel to great deserts and even the North or South Pole to experience parts of the world that most people truly do not see. I'd like to learn how people have survived in such inhospitable environments.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?What I would hope to pass on to them is a sense of self. In a world where people are marketed and marketed to, understanding of self is essential to survival. I'd like them to know that how we view ourselves will affect our path in life, and ultimately our happiness in what we've done.
