Essay Questions

What is your most memorable childhood experience?I grew up in a small, rural town. I always look back fondly on my time spent with my best friend riding our bikes all over town and swimming in our local pool.
What immediate family member do you closely identify with and why?My brother and I are best friends. He was the best man in my wedding. He lives far away now but we talk on the phone all the time. I can't say with any degree of certainty why we get along so well. It may be because we both live far from home and we like to maintain a sense of family.
What character traits do you admire in an individual?I most admire honesty, modesty and humility.
What is the funniest thing ever to happen to you?The game-losing shot--when the clock ticked away the final moments of a basketball game in high school, I caught an inbound pass, turned, and made a jump shot as the buzzer sounded. I began to jump and celebrate, only to realize that we had lost the game: we were down three points and I had made a two point shot.
If time and money were not an issue, where would you travel and why?I'd travel through Chile. I've been in several countries in Central and South America, but Chile has evaded my grasp. Between skiing and hiking in the Chilean Andes, traversing the capital Santiago, visiting the Easter Islands, and playing with the penguins in the almost-arctic south, there is simply too much to do and see to not visit Chile.
When and if you ever have children, what would you like to pass on to them?I'd like to pass a sense of civic responsibility to my children. Something my parents always encouraged in me was to think about my life and goals in terms of the common good, not for ego or personal gain.
